Description
A classic French Onion Soup made with caramelized onions, beef broth, and topped with melted cheese.

- 4 large onions, sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 cups beef broth
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 8 slices French bread
- 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions, salt, and sugar. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are caramelized (about 30 minutes).
- Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Pour in the beef broth and white wine, bringing the mixture to a simmer. Cook for 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, preheat the broiler.
- Distribute the soup into oven-safe bowls, place a slice of French bread on top of each bowl, and cover with shredded cheese.
- Broil the bowls until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can use a mix of beef and chicken broth.
